BH Number Benefits – BH i.e. Bharat Series Number Plate was started by the government on 15 September 2021. Its purpose was to give relief to those people whose jobs are often transferred from one state to another. Such as – government officials, defense staff, central or state government employees or people working in multinational companies.

The biggest feature of BH number is that the vehicle registered on it does not have to be registered again when it is taken from one state to another. That is, the hassle of repeated paperwork is over.

Who can get BH number?

Now the question arises that who gets this facility?

Eligibility conditions:

Government employees: Employees of the central or state government are directly eligible for BH number. They just have to show their service ID.

Defense personnel: People associated with the army, paramilitary forces etc. are also eligible for this.

Private employees: If you work in a private company which has offices in at least 4 states, then you can also apply for BH number. For this, you have to get an authorized letter from the company and give it to the dealer while purchasing the vehicle.

Benefits of BH number plate

1. No hassle of repeated registration
If a vehicle with a normal number plate has to be driven in another state for more than 6 months, then it has to be registered again in the new state. But this problem is not there in BH number.

2. New system of paying tax
Road tax on BH number does not have to be paid in lump sum, but is deposited every two years. This is very convenient, especially if you are going to be transferred soon.

3. The tax slab is also clear:

  1. Petrol car up to 10 lakh: 8% tax
  2. Cars worth 10–20 lakh: 10% tax
  3. Above 20 lakh: 12% tax
  4. Diesel vehicle: 2% extra in the above tax
  5. Electric vehicle: 2% exemption in tax

For how many years does one have to pay tax?

The validity of BH number is initially 14 years. After that road tax will be charged every year.

BH number also has disadvantages

While there are advantages, there are also some drawbacks which cannot be ignored.

1. Difficult to sell the vehicle
A vehicle with BH number can be sold only to those who are eligible for BH number. That is, if you want to sell your vehicle to a common citizen, then it can be difficult. This can reduce the resale value of the vehicle and it can be difficult to find a buyer.

2. It is necessary to pay tax every two years
Although paying tax every two years sounds easy, but if you do not pay tax on time, then you may have to pay a fine of ₹ 100 per day. That is, payment on time is necessary or else it can become a big headache.

3. Not fully accepted in all states
Although BH number has been implemented under the central rule, its infrastructure and process are not fully developed in some states. Due to this, sometimes minor administrative hurdles may arise during interstate movement.

Is BH number right for you?

If your job is such that you get transferred every two-three years, then BH number is a great option for you. But if you are going to live permanently in the same state and are thinking of selling the vehicle soon, then BH number is not beneficial for you.

How to apply for BH number?

  1. Ask for BH number from the dealer while buying the vehicle
  2. Give the documents as per eligibility – service ID or authorized letter from the company
  3. The dealer will register the vehicle in BH series
  4. Pay road tax for two years
  5. Get the BH number plate installed and drive without tension

BH number is a very smart and convenient scheme for those who change states frequently. This reduces the hassle of paperwork, RTO visits and transfer problems.

The disadvantages associated with it cannot be ignored either. Selling the vehicle and paying the tax on time can become a burden for you if you are not careful. So before getting a BH number, evaluate your situation properly and then take a decision.
