Data presented in Parliament showed that the number of counterfeit Rs 500 notes detected rose from 21,865 million to 91,110 million between 2018-19 and 2022-23.
There has been a 15% decrease in the financial year 2022–2023, which has come down to 85,711 million. The highest increase in the turnover of counterfeit notes was seen in the year 2020–2021, when counterfeit notes of Rs 500 increased from 39,453 million to 79,669 million in the financial year 2020–2021.
Fake currency of Rs 500
In 2016, the central government had decided to demonetize two important notes. The 500 and 1000 rupee notes were then discontinued.
2,000 rupee notes were then issued in the country. The 2000 rupee notes also did not last long in the market. The pink note of 2000 rupees was discontinued in 2023.

- Size: The original note is 66 mm x 150 mm in size.
- Denomination: 500 is printed in Devanagari script.
- Image: Mahatma Gandhi's portrait is in the centre.
- Small letter- The words Bharat and India are written in small letters.
- Security cover- Colour changing security thread changes colour from green to blue when tilted.
- Watermark- Gandhi's portrait and electrotype 500 watermark are visible when held up to light.
- Colour changing ink Rs 500 mark changes colour from green to blue when tilted to the bottom right of the note.
- Mourning pillar: Mourning pillar symbol is on the right.
- Swachh Bharat logo: Swachh Bharat logo and slogan are printed on the note. It
