The design of the new Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes will remain the same as the current Mahatma Gandhi (new) series notes. The colour, design and security features of these new notes will also be the same as the old ones.

RBI has said that all the old Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes already in circulation will also remain in circulation. These changes are taking place at a time when Sanjay Malhotra takes over as RBI Governor in December 2024, replacing Shaktikanta Das.

Why the decision is being made

This step is being taken so that the supply of cash in the market remains intact and the banking system remains stable. Also, it is a normal process to issue new notes with the signature of every new governor after he takes charge. This is the reason why new 100 and 200 rupee notes with Sanjay Malhotra's signature are being introduced.

Let us tell you that earlier RBI had informed that it will issue new 50 rupee notes.

These notes will have the signature of the new governor Sanjay Malhotra. Their design will also be similar to the 50 rupee notes of the current Mahatma Gandhi series. Also, all the 50 rupee notes already in circulation will also remain valid and in circulation.
