Kishanganj News: Maize farmers benefit from clear weather, but are worried about low prices

Bihar News: Maize farmers, who were troubled by the continuous rains last month, are now feeling relieved as the weather has cleared. Due to bright sunshine, farmers are busy drying maize in the fields. They fear that if it rains again, the remaining crop may also get spoiled.

 

Kishanganj News: Heavy rains occurred in the hilly areas of Nepal last night. After this, water suddenly rose in the Kanakayi and Budhi Kanakayi rivers. 

Due to waterlogging in the Diara region, maize crops worth lakhs of rupees of hundreds of farmers got ruined. Now with the weather clearing up, farmers are trying to save the crop by drying the remaining maize. The problems of the farmers did not end here.

They are further worried due to the fall in the price of maize in the market. The government support price is fixed at Rs 2400 per quintal, but middlemen are buying maize from farmers for less than Rs 1900. 

Earlier this maize was being sold for more than Rs 2000. Farmers told that initially the price of maize was 2100 to 2150 rupees per quintal. 

After continuous rains, it has come down to 1750 to 1800 rupees. Moneylenders are also avoiding buying maize now. They told that they face problems due to non-purchase of maize at the government rate in the area.

The area of ​​maize cultivation has increased in the past years. 80 to 85 percent farmers of Dighalbank block cultivate maize as a cash crop. The area of ​​maize cultivation has increased in the past years. 

Farmers told that the expenditure on maize cultivation in one acre is 25 to 30 thousand rupees. This time, due to the fall in the price, it has become difficult to even recover the cost. 

Farmers told that maize is cultivated on a large scale in the district. Despite this, there is no maize based industry here. Neither is there any arrangement for buying maize in the government market or PACS. Due to this, farmers are incurring losses.
